South Shields Town Hall and Civic Buildings
The impressive Town Hall of 1910 is certainly well worth a visit it bears a copper weather vane in the form of a lifeboat which if rumours are to be believed can seat upto approx 8 grown men. The town's crest (pre-1974) featured the lifeboat and the associated motto - Always Ready - which was later adopted as the motto of South Tyneside.
Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum
Over 1500 years on, the remains at Arbeia represent the most extensively excavated example of a military supply base anywhere in the Roman Empire. Now experience what Roman life was like at one of Britain's most important archaeological sites. Walk around excavated remains of the fort's granaries, barracks and commander's headquarters. From June to September watch the archaeologists unearth more of Arbeia's secrets during the summer excavation programme.
See the reconstruction of the fort's West Gate and marvel at the scale and magnificence of Roman architecture. Inside the gateway learn more about the history of the site from the Stone Age to the Roman occupation through to the present day in the exhibition "Gateway to the Past"..
South Shields Coastline
South Shields has six miles of coastline and three miles of river frontage, dominated by the massive piers at the mouth of the Tyne. These are best viewed from the Lawe Top, which also houses the cannons that once defended the river.
The town has extensive beaches and the Leas, which stretches along more than three miles of the town's coastline, is a National Trust protected area. Marsden Bay, with its famous Marsden Rock, is one of the largest seabird colonies in UK.
